A self-paced online course in reptile and amphibian biology, natural history, conservation, ethical observation, citizen science, and public communication. It is built for adult learners who want to understand these animals properly and use that knowledge responsibly. Prior academic training in biology is not required.

What you will explore

Foundations of classification and diversity; biology, physiology, reproduction, and natural history; living alongside wildlife and correcting identification and safety myths; conservation pressures; ethical observation, applicable rules, and responsible recordkeeping; scientific thinking, research, citizen science, volunteering, interpretation, and communicating science to the public.

How it works

Short written lessons with supporting media, knowledge checks, reflection, and applied activities. Your progress is saved, so you can work in whatever segments your week allows. There is no cohort, no start date, and no expiry — take two weeks or two years. The final exam is open book, with no time limit and unlimited attempts.

Nothing in the course requires catching, touching, or keeping an animal. Field activities are observation-based, and every assignment that assumes something about your location, mobility, budget, or season has a published alternative underneath it.

What the certificate means

Learners who complete the required coursework and assessments receive a Certified Herpetological Guide certificate of completion. It documents completion of THC’s educational program. It is not an academic degree, a professional license, a government credential, or authorization to handle wildlife outside the laws and policies that apply where you live.
