About Course

Starting and Running a Reptile & Amphibian Rescue is a self-paced course for people who have become the person others call when a reptile, amphibian, or small exotic animal needs a home, and who are asking honestly whether that should become a rescue.

It covers everything about running a rescue except the animal care itself: whether and how to start, choosing a model, researching the laws that apply to you, liability and insurance, intake and adoption, the systems that keep a large collection healthy, emergency and fire planning, volunteers, boundaries, funding, recordkeeping, and how a rescue ends well. Reptiles and amphibians are the center, with invertebrates and the small birds and mammals that arrive at any exotic rescue.

The course is written from a working rescue in Louisiana. It teaches you how to find the rules that apply where you live rather than pretending one set of rules fits everyone, and an appendix orients readers outside the US. It is not legal, tax, or veterinary advice, and it is not wildlife rehabilitation training.

Completion earns a certificate of completion. There are no quizzes or assignments; optional self-led activities throughout build toward a written operating plan, and a library of generic templates and worksheets is included.

What Will You Learn?

  • Decide, on purpose and with the costs in view, whether to start or continue a rescue
  • Choose a model, a species scope, and a capacity ceiling that fit what you actually have
  • Research the laws, permits, entity options, and tax rules that apply where you live, and know what to ask a professional
  • Run intake, quarantine, adoption, and transfers with the paperwork that protects animals and people
  • Build the daily systems, records, and continuity plan that let a large collection be cared for by someone other than you
  • Plan for power loss, cold, heat, storm, fire, and your own absence before they happen
  • Recruit and keep volunteers, hold boundaries with the public, and fund the work realistically
  • Know how a rescue ends well, and write the plan now
