R-8.01: Becoming a Herpetologist

Updated

People who love reptiles and amphibians go by a few different names. Someone who keeps or breeds them in captivity is a herpetoculturist. Someone who goes outdoors to find, watch, and photograph them is a field herper, or just a herper. Someone who studies them and adds to what science knows is a herpetologist. Plenty of herpers and keepers become herpetologists along the way, once they start collecting and sharing real data. Yes, but not exactly the way you might picture. Herpetology is a branch of biology. Nobody is hired as "a herpetologist" and nothing else; they are biologists who specialize in herps. There is no such thing as a degree in herpetology.
