R-7.09: Field Herping: Tips & Tricks

Updated

So you want to find herps in the wild. Good news: they are all around you. Bad news: they can see you coming from a mile away, and being there is not the same as being seen. The first thing I teach new herpers is to stop tromping. Charging through the brush or striding down the trail is fine when you are late for something, but it is the wrong way to meet animals. They stay alive by noticing anything unusual. Learn to walk softly, as if you were wearing moccasins, and look all around you, not just straight ahead. Has the sun just started warming things up?
