R-5.05: Hidden in Plain Sight

Updated

Plenty of animals use camouflage, but herps include some of the best hiders on Earth. You could be six inches from a Leaf-tailed Gecko or a Vietnamese Mossy Frog, with someone pointing right at it, and still not see it. Most herps are not that extreme, but they blend in well enough that you walk right past them in the woods. Camouflage has served these animals well for a very long time. Unless you live somewhere frozen, you are surrounded by herps every day. They stay unnoticed by blending in and by slipping out of sight.
