R-5.04: Adapting to Suburbia

Updated

Animals survive by adapting. The wild is always changing, and animals that cannot keep up usually do not make it. The trouble is that people are changing the world faster than most species can adjust. Some manage anyway, and a few even find ways to use what we build. For our part, there are ways to make their lives easier. Look at the young alligator in the photo. When a tropical storm flooded the Florida Everglades, water poured across a road, and fish were suddenly exposed as they washed over the pavement. This little gator figured out fast that a flooded road meant an easy meal. Altered habitats do create chances like this for adaptable animals.
