When to help an animal in trouble, and when to leave it alone As a wildlife rehabilitator, I hear "let nature take its course" all the time. It is good advice, when it fits. Every day I tell callers to leave an animal alone, because people who try to help without knowing what they are doing usually make things worse. But I also see people use that phrase to walk away from an animal that truly needed help. Here is the rule that sorts it out. If an animal is in trouble because of nature, leave it alone. If it is in trouble because of people, help. Let me show you what I mean.
