Reptiles and amphibians are threads in an enormous, tangled web of life. It can feel like every fact in the universe is one search away, but the truth is that we are only beginning to understand nature. Scientists have named only a fraction of the species on Earth, and every year someone discovers something that flips what we thought we knew. When people picture a "food chain," they often imagine a neat circle: little things get eaten by bigger things, the biggest things eventually die, and decomposers start it over. They picture a snake as a mouse-eater and a frog as a fly-catcher. There is some truth in that.
