Roads are one of the biggest dangers wild animals face. A road cuts an animal's home into pieces, and every time it needs to get to the other side, for food, water, a mate, or a place to lay eggs, it has to cross. Turtles have it worst. A turtle's answer to danger is to pull into its shell and hold still, which is exactly the wrong move in the middle of a road, and it makes the turtle look like a rock or a lump of trash to a driver. You are not driving yet, but you will be someday, and in the meantime you are the extra set of eyes in the car.
