R-1.06: Frogs 101

Updated

Frogs and toads have a lot of fans, and they have earned them. Scientists call the whole group anurans (an-YOOR-uns), a word that means "no tail." There are more than 8,000 known species, and new ones are found every year. Frogs come in a huge range of colors, shapes, and sizes, and they live almost everywhere. There are even frogs that spend most of the year buried in desert soil and come up for just a few days to eat and lay eggs. The biggest frog is the Goliath Frog of Africa, which can be over a foot long. The smallest is smaller than a fingernail.
