Emerging infectious diseases have caused serious declines in reptile and amphibian populations worldwide. Field activities can unintentionally move pathogens, invasive organisms, chemicals, mud, or contaminated water from one site to another. Good biosecurity therefore matters even when you never touch an animal. The most durable principles are straightforward: Start clean. Arrive with clean footwear, tools, nets, containers, and other gear. Remove dirt and organic material. Mud, vegetation, and debris can interfere with disinfectants and can themselves move organisms between sites. Do not transfer water or mud between sites. Avoid rinsing gear in a pond, stream, wetland, or other natural waterbody and then carrying that material elsewhere.
