Learning about all the adverse pressures on herps and wildlife can undoubtedly be daunting and disheartening. We must accept that the current state of the environment “is what it is,” so to speak, and work towards improving it in whatever ways we are capable of. We should look backward for the lessons history provides but not let despair over diversity that is already lost keep us from preserving what is left. The good news is that people and organizations are working to protect our environment and the organisms that surround us. Those of us entering the field need not begin from scratch or reinvent the wheel.
